It looks like Google Glass might not be the only wearable computer exciting consumers this year. A new startup called Telepathy has developed Telepathy One, a wearable, computer-enabled device that was demonstrated at a press event in New York City last night. The brainchild of Japanese augmented-reality entrepreneur Takahito Iguchi, Telepathy One is a slim, lightweight computing device that wraps around a user’s head. Relocating from Tokyo into a new San Francisco headquarters this month, Telepathy aims, Iguchi said, to advance social communication by allowing real-time video broadcasting and image sharing.
“We live in a world where we share everything already,” Iguchi said. “Telepathy makes it more real-time and more intimate.”
Unlike the more versatile Glass, Linux-based Telepathy One is designed for a specific use case — two-way, real-time communication in which Telepathy users share photos and videos that others can access online. The Bluetooth-enabled Telepathy One relies on your mobile phone for wireless internet access.

Google Glass challenger Telepathy One competing for the “Willy Wonka” of tech title.

You have to hand it to Google, somehow in the absence of Steve Jobs , Sergey Brin and Larry Page have managed to step in and slowly start filling in the shoes of the tech world’s Willy Wonka.
Google Glass is barely a “beta” product yet (meaning it hasn’t launched to consumers yet) and it has already generated a formidable cloud of buzz. The level of ambition in the project, has captured the hopes of millions of techies , and made lots of people believe that its the next “revolutionary” thing. If you throw in Google’s Self driving cars , and other projects at Google X, you start seeing the tech “Willy Wonka” aura that the Google founders have been working hard to create…

media coverage | Telepathy One set to be released before Google Glass
Telepathy One set to be released before Google Glass
By Seth Fitzgerald
Even though Google Glass is the current AR device receiving the most attention, there is another player potentially set to come on the market before Glass is officially released. Japanese Inventor Takahito Iguchi and his team, have been working on an AR device called the Telepathy One, which will rival Glass in features but will cost significantly less.
Telepathy One has a much more refined and direct focus than Glass with Iguchi suggesting that it is meant to enhance media consumption, particularly videos and photos. The device will be able to do most of the same things as Glass but will focus on sharing media.
The basic design for the Telepathy One is the same as on Google Glass. A projector is slightly above your right eye so that it does not interfere with your normal line-of-sight. While most of the design is the same, the one main difference is that unlike Glass which will use bone conduction for its sound, the Telepathy One will utilize regular ear buds (this will help keep the price down.)
While Glass is likely to be better for high-end users, its $1,500 price point is quite a stretch for the average everyday user so it is nice to see someone coming out with a more consumer-oriented AR device.
I’d like to note that we have not yet used the Telepathy One but from looking at other people’s first-hand accounts of the device, most of its features already perform well but some design modification is needed to help keep it from moving around on your head. No official pricing or availability has been announced, but Iguchi is currently saying that it is set to be released this year.

media coverage | Telepathy One Seeks to Rival Google Glass
Telepathy One Seeks to Rival Google Glass
By Greg Quick
We have been a bit remiss in talking about the recent news related to the Google Glass efforts such as they are powered by Android, expected to launch later this year for under the $1,500 price point and that Mark Andreessen’s company Andreessen Horowitz is teaming with Kleiner Perkins and Google Ventures to fund startups to develop apps for Google Glass in an effort called the Glass Collective.
That is all nice and good but expect a good deal more info coming out when the Google I/O conference rolls around in mid-May in San Francisco, and that seems like a more appropriate time to do a complete roundup on the platform.
For now we will satisfy ourselves with Telepathy One, a startup rival that was demonstrated earlier this week in New York City by a Japanese inventor named Takahito Iguchi, who demonstrated the streamline device and showed its first apps.
While it comes in a headset like the Google effort it is not glasses but rather an optically projected screen that appears in front of the user. The projector is positioned above the eye in a way that is no expected to interfere with a user’s line of sight. It also features ear buds for audio and currently has a camera and a cellular phone app also in the works and at least partly demonstrated this week.
Unlike Google Glass, the Telepathy One device is being pitched much more as an extension of social media that will enable users to share what they are viewing with friends and family if they have a similar device or have a Magna Camera app on a smartphone.
It will be interesting of a small player can actually challenge Google, or for that matter the other variations of connected glasses that have been emerging over the last year or so, but we can hope that we get a healthy marketplace with multiple choices.
Pricing and availability are not available but the creator said that he wants to sell it for significantly less that the reported $1,500 price tag that Google Glass will have and ship this year.

media coverage | Japanese upstart ready to challenge Google Glass with Telepathy One
Japanese upstart ready to challenge Google Glass with Telepathy One
By AJ Dellinger
Google Glass has the interest of much of the tech world, but currently has limited availability for people who want to get their hands on them. For those who can’t wait to be able to wear some technology on their head, a Japanese startup may have an alternative to the search engine giant’s creation. Entrepreneur Takahito Iguchi showed off Telepathy One, the wearable tech solution that his team created, last night in New York.
Telepathy One has a unique design that is decidedly more sci-fi than the Google Glass display. An optically projected screen will appear in front of the eyes of the device wearer. Displayed on the tiny projector is media from a cell phone via an app. It has the capability to stream video and photos from the phone or capture media from the device and send it back to the phone. That is the emphasis of Telepathy One, it’s capability to share between the wearer and the user of the phone app. This gives it a more focused goal than Google Glass for the time being.
A popular camera app in Japan, Manga Camera, was ready to run on the demo device. The app created cartoon version of people in the picture. When one took a photo with the phone app, the manga-fied version of the photo would appear on the projection screen of Telepathy One. This appears to be the type of functionality the device will aim to provide when it launches near Christmas of this year. No price or other details are really known at this point.

Google Glass Competitor ‘Telepathy’ Aims to Get to Market First

What’s a big tech release like Google Glass without a little competition?
Tokyo-based entrepreneur Takahito Iguchi, pictured above, has created a wearable computing device called Telepathy One and — with a built-in camera, a micro-projection screen and a sleek, wraparound design — the gadget looks to be a cheaper alternative to Google’s upcoming launch.
Iguchi and his team demonstrated two prototypes of the device at a press conference in New York. Similar to Google Glass, the headset’s “screen” aligns with the wearer’s right eye. The ear buds, as you can see below, provide audio and hold the device onto your head. It’s surprisingly lightweight, but I had some trouble adjusting the headset well enough to see its display — after fidgeting for a minute, I had to hold it in place.
The headset’s main purpose, Iguchi said, is to easily share videos and intimate moments in real time, all the while wearing a “cool, stylish” device…

media coverage | A Google Glass rival emerges from an upstart in Japan
A Google Glass rival emerges from an upstart in Japan
by Katie Fehrenbacher
A Japanese entrepreneur’s answer to Google Glass, but with a Japanese manga-style twist.
Japanese entrepreneur Takahito Iguchi wants people to see the world through other people’s eyes. But as a less ambitious jumping off point, he’ll kick it off with a world that looks like a Japanese manga cartoon. His device, called the Telepathy One, is the closest thing I’ve seen under development yet to Google’s Glass gadget, and at an event in New York City on Tuesday night, Iguchi and his team showed off prototypes (two working and several others just mockups) of the wearable image-streaming glasses to the media.
Like with Google Glass, users wear the Telepathy One on their heads, in front of the eye and wrapped around the ears. Telepathy actually has ear buds that fit into the ears, so you can presumably hear audio functionality when they add it in…

Telepathy One Headset Might Be A Potent Google Glass Rival
By Edwin Kee on 04/15/2013
At the moment, the whole world’s eyes would most probably be concentrating on the impending release of Google Glass to developers where wearable technology is concerned, but this does not mean that there are no competitors for the Internet search giant to worry about. In fact, the market does seem to be a booming one, and here we are with a different take on Google Glass that is the brainchild of the collective effort of Japanese companies, where the final result is known as the Telepathy One. The Telepathy One was basically designed to ensure that there is an always-on computer located right in front of your eyes, where the approach is different, although retaining a similar form factor.
The Telepathy One does seem to be the Google Glass sent to the fat house, where it lacks the small display or side-mounted interface controls, but will rely on a micro-projection unit instead which is controlled sans wires using your connected smartphone or tablet device. It will also rely on in-ear speakers for its audio needs, and there is no word on pricing or availability as at press time, despite the fact that it will be cheaper than Google Glass. The margin of affordability remains to be known though…
